'Art is math is art' article

Professor HSM Coxeter spent his life explaining the world around him using math, particularly explaining M.C. Escher's artwork through geometry.  The article, by Stephen Strauss, was just a small interview of Coxeter's work and his new paper explaining the math behind the Escher's Circle Limits III, shown below.

Escher claimed that he was not a mathematician, but he made these  mathematically perfect pieces of art, showcasing a innate understanding of dimensions, angles and trigonometry without even knowing it.

It's as though Escher is someone who doesn't quite speak the language of math; Coxeter translates for him, weaving concepts and theories together to explain this beautiful piece of artwork.

Escher understood the concepts, just couldn't speak it in a certain language, so he showcased those concepts in another.

I am on the lookout now for Professor Coxete's papers; I have another paper by an individual who studied Coxete and Escher which I will be reading.

I just thought it was interesting how Coxete said that he "proved" that Escher got Circle Limits III "mathematically perfect".  Perhaps we can think of it just as he translated what Escher wanted to showcase.  More on this later.

You can read the article here.
